Meet our playful penguins!
The Oceanarium is home to our playful Humboldt penguins - each with their own unique personality!
You may wonder how our keepers can tell our penguins apart? Not only do they each have unique personalities, but they also have variations in markings and facial features! Next time you visit us, see if you can identify each of our Humboldt penguins!
Don’t miss our talks! The penguins are fed at 12:00pm and 3:30pm every day.
Augustin
Born May 7th, 2003, at Zoo Zurich
Augustin is small but very good at standing up for himself against other penguins. He is very gentle and quiet. He loves his partner Philippa.
Diego
Born November 11th, 2002, at Ouwehand Zoo
Diego is very gentle to feed and light on his feet, which has led to keepers nicknaming him 'Twinkle Toes'. He also swims a lot! You may see him alongside same sex partner Zorro. He proved to be a fin-tastic father to foster daughter Santi!
Chile
Born February 4th, 2010, at Faunia
Chile is a quiet soul with a huge appetite. He is very energetic and loves anything shiny! He spends a lot of time swimming and interacting with guests. He loves spending time with his partner Twiglet.
Private
Born March 13th, 2004, at Newquay Zoo
Private is the boss of the colony! He stands guard at the gate, eagerly awaiting his keepers and the fish they bring! He loves being close to visitors and is very protective towards his partner Biscuit. Private takes his name from one of the pesky penguins from the Madagascar movies.
Zorro
Born June 26th, 2004, at Zoo Zurich
Zorro is very inquisitive and spends his time hanging around the pool with his partner Diago. The same sex couple raised Santi and our previous chick Ponyo, who now lives at Weymouth Sea Life Centre.
Biscuit
Born April 8th, 2016, at Folly Farm
Biscuit is the gentlest member of the colony. She is easy to tell apart as she has the least belly spots out of everyone! Biscuit loves getting attention from the keepers. She likes posing for photos and enjoys following the keepers around even when she’s not hungry! Biscuit is partnered up with Private.
Millie
Born April 7th, 2016, at Folly Farm
Millie LOVES to catch her food in the water. She is also very popular with the male penguins! Millie is now dating Dragon.
Twiglet
Born April 2nd, 2016, at Folly Farm
Twiglet likes to hop at feeding time to get closer to the fish and make sure she is noticed! Her partner is Chile.
Philippa
Born April 25th, 2018, at BirdWorld
Philippa AKA Pippa is our cheekiest penguin! She is impatient and will nip our keepers’ legs if she is left waiting for food. She is named after the late HRH Prince Phillip. Her partner is Augustin.
Santiago
Born April 24th, 2023, at Oceanarium
Santi is officially the youngest of the colony and most playful. She loves chasing feathers, reflections and shadows!
Dragon
Born May 23rd, 2022, at Weymouth Sea Life Centre
Dragon has recently joined us from Weymouth Sea Life Centre, becoming the youngest male on the beach. He is a cheeky chappie and always wants to be involved with everything and loves attention! He has recently taken a particular liking to Millie.
