The Oceanarium is celebrating after winning two of the 16 award categories at this year’s prestigious Bournemouth Tourism Awards (November 26).
The seafront aquarium clinched the title of Sustainable Tourism Initiative of the Year and Tourism Marketing Initiative of the Year, making it one of the biggest winners on the night.
Triumphing over strong competition from other nominees, the Oceanarium was recognised for the adoption of its ‘Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ policy in winning the Sustainable Tourism Initiative of the Year award. The introduction of the attraction’s latest feature, Global Meltdown, which raises awareness of the potential effects of climate change on the world’s marine environment, was also commended.
Having previously won the Tourism Marketing Initiative of the Year award in both 2006 and 2007, the Oceanarium secured the accolade again this year for the overwhelming success of its local residents’ campaign, which invited anyone living in the BH postcode area to visit the attraction for half price throughout March.
James Eels, UK Director at Parques Reunidos, which incorporates the Oceanarium, Lakes Aquarium in Cumbria and Blackpool Zoo, said: "Everyone at the Oceanarium is delighted and proud to have won not just one, but two accolades at what is considered one of the region’s top award ceremonies. Each title represents the hard work of the entire team at the attraction and continues to assert the Oceanarium’s position as a leading visitor destination.
“In what has been a difficult year for the tourist industry it’s a great honour to not only attend, but be successful at an event that truly recognises and celebrates the important role tourism plays in the region.”
