With European shark populations in decline due to overfishing and one-third threatened with extinction, the Oceanarium is demonstrating its support for shark conservation by celebrating the third annual European Shark Week until Sunday October 18.
Keen to raise the profile of the feared predators now turned prey, the Oceanarium is hosting various daily shark talks, a quiz trail and colouring competition, to highlight the need to protect one of the world’s most misrepresented creatures.
As well as enjoying European Shark Week celebrations, visitors to the Oceanarium will also be encouraged to sign the anti shark finning petition.
With the EU ban on “finning” – slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea – renowned as one of the world’s weakest, the petition urges EU Fisheries Ministers and the European Commission for follow up action under the recent Shark Plan, which sets the stage for vast improvements to EU shark policies, including the finning ban.
Oliver Buttling, Curator said: "Infamous as savage killers, sharks have been unduly tarnished with a reputation they do not deserve. With many different species of sharks and their ray relatives at the Oceanarium, we hope to improve their image during European Shark Week and raise awareness of the need to protect these awesome creatures, which have more to fear from us than we do from them."
